Good morning. Buy low, sell high? Ha … that’s for losers. Buy high, sell higher. That is the recent story as investors rush into stocks … gold … Bitcoin … driving each at or near all-time highs … as record prices bring added interest … as no one wants to get left behind. Stocks today, however, are taking a pause as tariff threats (and I use the word purposely) have begun anew … as Canada is suddenly facing a tariff higher than that being proposed for most other nations. Meanwhile … the 10% global blanket tariff proposal might be raised to 15% or even 20% … and why not? The President created a formula based on “common sense” … “deficits” … “how we’ve been treated” … and “raw numbers” … and while he pointed out that “we never had anybody in the White House that understood the numbers or were into it like I have,” it seems that Brazil was punished more than most due to the “grave injustices of the current regime” … advancing justification into other nation’s politics and beyond claimed trade imbalances. We might see prices on some pharmaceuticals come down … or at least that is what is being implied … as the FDA’s commissioner told CNBC that “drug affordability” will be considered during reviews … which could lead to shortened time for approvals for those supporting “U.S. national interests.” So, in effect, companies can “pay” (via lowering prices) to speed things up a bit … similar to those lucky few at Disneyworld … waiting to get on rides … who pay a bit extra to move to the front of the line. While I typically try to offer (many times) a cynical view on the economy, you can read about what is going on using many other sites … so I try to interject personal stories when I can … so here goes another one … I saw a police car in front of my home yesterday … with a utility truck nearby … and it took me a while to realize the telephone pole in front of my home had the top 1/3 broken off … dangling above my driveway … being held up only by the many wires leading to my house. I went to chat with the officer (careful not to walk under the hanging piece) and was told that some woman drove down the street around 9:30 AM … proceeded to hit a mailbox and 2 telephone poles … before the one in front of my home put an end to this driving adventure. The result? DUI … at 9:30 in the morning. I repeat … 9:30 in the morning! I’m just glad it was summer, and the school kids were not standing near the street. What brought this to mind is the last story included below … which holds a fascinating claim on the added longevity of mice that were introduced to psilocybin … a main ingredient associated with “magic mushrooms.” A problem is that this is classified as a “Schedule 1” drug which greatly hampers studies … but maybe, just maybe, an exception will be made and limited human trials can begin. Entirely with the dedication to advance science … … I do have a few friends who I am quite sure would volunteer. Have a great day, Joseph G. Witthohn, CFA Have any questions?
