Celebrating 20 Years with Emerald: Nishit Trivedi

Nishit Trivedi, PhD, MBBS, MBA – Director of Life Sciences Research & Portfolio Manager

This year, we are proud to celebrate Nishit’s 20-year anniversary with Emerald.

Since joining the firm in 2006, Nishit has played an important role in the research and portfolio management teams, contributing to the broadening of the Healthcare and Life Sciences sectors, and the F/m Emerald Life Sciences Innovation ETF.

Over the years, he has embodied the firm’s commitment to research excellence, client service, teamwork, and long-term growth.

To commemorate this milestone, we sat down with Nishit to reflect on his journey, experiences, and advice.

• 20 years is an incredible milestone. What first brought you to Emerald and what made you stay?

My first introduction to Emerald was through a friend and mentor in Graduate School. With Emerald investing in early-stage life sciences companies, I liked the fact that this role allowed me to stay at the cutting edge of innovation.

Being a physician/scientist by training I always loved to be involved with research and with my experiences in medical school, graduate school and business school, I had technical knowledge to understand and evaluate the potential from these innovations happening in life sciences. This role also allowed me to meet with some of the most intelligent and entrepreneurial leaders in the life sciences industry and I felt like I was constantly learning from my experiences within this industry.

Another thing that made this journey very exciting and rewarding was seeing scientific innovation in a lab turn into early-stage biotech and medical device companies and how innovation progressed from an idea to a drug or device that would impact the lives of millions.

I was also very fortunate to work alongside very helpful colleagues and senior management, and that strong supportive and collaborative culture of Emerald is what has kept me here for 2 decades now.

• What skill or mindset has been most valuable to your success over the past 20 years? 

I believe a researcher should always be humble and adaptable and realize that science is constantly evolving and there is new science that comes to light every day that can further prove or disprove a thesis of the past.

Being open to the constantly changing world and the curiosity of learning something new every day is an essential part of my DNA that has made my journey of the past 2 decades fun.  There is only one thing that I know and that is “I know very little and I have a lot to learn”.

I also make it a practice to meditate every day and that brings a lot of clarity in my thought processes and allows me to stay focused on my work. In a world where there is a lot of information, it is very important to focus on the things that are more important and have a deep understanding of the subject matter to develop a longer-term vision.

 

• After 20 years, what continues to motivate and inspire you?

New scientific innovations and the curiosity of meeting with a new company with new technology is what continues to motivate me even after 20 years. There is always something new to learn in this industry and no two days are the same.

I also continue to be inspired by our Chief Investment Officer Ken Mertz, who has been an excellent teacher and mentor from whom I have learnt a lot over the years.

At home, I have a wonderful wife and 2 children that keep me motivated to work hard and help me become a better version of myself.
