Good morning:.
Well, the storm is finally gone and those in the northeast are drying out … but there was plenty of notice given, so many were well prepared.
Sometimes storms are expected and don’t arrive … and what reminded me of this was all the hoopla surrounding September being the worst month for stocks on a calendar basis … and even though things are slightly down today, it seems we have weathered that storm. Again.
Yes, yes, yes … AI is driving things … and I am actually typing while waiting for a presentation to begin on the topic … feeling excited as new things are being announced every day … for selfishly perhaps … I just want to feel less lost.
One of the speakers spoke about stock analysts and brought up a great point as he said in his view that “… AI will separate the best and worst analysts …” in that some will use it as a starting point and then go much more in-depth with the analysis of a company … while others might count on AI to every bit of the heavy lifting … making them no different than anyone else not willing to dig deeply to do a better analysis.
Meanwhile we all heard that AI will be the end of us – but Bill Gates fortunately gave the view that this is incorrect … and only a billion of us will be eliminated. Thanks Bill … I think.
That will about wrap it up for today as I need to pay attention to the speaker … having heard one more interesting point about how fast things are happening.
The audience was invited to think about the days when we would use a camera to take a picture … and drop the film off at the local store for the 5-day wait to see the result. People were quite careful about the pictures they took (as each one costs money) with a lot more thought and little waste.
Today? People have no problem with using their smart phones and taking dozens of pictures of their cat or even their poodle … as if others will find these to be quite interesting (PS … they’re not).
That will about wrap things up for me today.
Lunch was just served and I suddenly feel the urge to take a picture of my food.
Have a great day,
Joseph G. Witthohn, CFA
